Smash E-Sports

ESPN for Videogames.

Long before it was mainstream, I knew that competitive videogames were destined for the big screen. Now commonly known as e-sports, but there was a time where it was a strange concept. As a long time fan of smash bros. melee, I wanted to see what it would look like to promo the game ESPN style.

Moving Stages and Screens.

I wanted to showcase some high level gameplay but in a way that looked like ESPN sports reel footage. I decided to create a moving stage that evolved throughout the video while it showcased clips from popular matches.

Smash Stadium.

It was important to use as many recognizable elements from the game as possible to merge the 3D and Motion Graphics world with that of the game. The exclamation mark is a popular icon indicating a new challenger approaching and it still widely recognized to this day.

Final Destination.

This stage is one of the most popular and well known stages in the game and even in meme culture. It’s often referenced as ‘no items, fox only, final destination’. I thought it was appropriate to end the video with not only the stage but also the final boss in the game, Master Hand.

E-Sports, It’s in the game.
